I’ve read through the Bible in a year a few times now, and every year I find myself looking for ways to stay engaged and keep showing up.
One year, I journalled my way through Scripture, filling notebooks with prayers, questions, and moments where a verse seemed to leap off the page.
Another year, I followed the Bible in One Year programme with Nicky Gumbel, listening to his reflections as I travelled to work or folded the washing.
This year, I’m doing something different again. I’m listening to David Suchet read the Bible to me, and I’m making notes in my new His Word, My Heart notebook.
I’ve discovered that the method matters less than the habit.
Some days I have pages of notes. Other days it’s a single sentence. Occasionally, it’s just a verse that I don’t want to forget.
What keeps me coming back is not the satisfaction of ticking another day off a reading plan. It’s the quiet confidence that God’s Word is still speaking.
There is something special about slowing down long enough to ask:
• What stood out to me today?
• What does this tell me about God?
• What might He be saying to me through these words?
That’s why I created His Word, My Heart.
It’s a simple companion for anyone reading through the Bible in a year. A place to record reflections, prayers, questions, and the things God places on your heart as you journey through Scripture.
Because sometimes the most important thing isn’t how quickly we read the Bible.
It’s making space for the Bible to read us.
Have you ever read through the Bible in a year? I’d love to know what helped you stick with it.
